Leg Venous Insufficiency

Venous Ulcer & Chronic Venous Insufficiency Treatment
Expert Care for Venous Ulcers and Leg Venous Insufficiency at Houston Vein Institute
Venous ulcers, also known as venous stasis ulcers, are chronic wounds caused by poor blood circulation in the lower legs. These ulcers often result from chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—a condition where the valves in the veins of the legs fail to return blood efficiently to the heart, leading to pooling, swelling, and skin breakdown.
At Houston Vein Institute, under the care of Dr. Miguel Gomez, we specialize in diagnosing and treating both venous ulcers and leg venous insufficiency using advanced, minimally invasive therapies tailored to each patient. We proudly serve Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, The Woodlands, and surrounding Texas communities.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?
CVI is a common yet underdiagnosed vascular condition where damaged valves in leg veins cause venous reflux—the backward flow of blood. Over time, this results in increased venous pressure, which can damage the skin, cause pain, swelling, and lead to venous ulcers in advanced stages.
Risk Factors:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Varicose veins
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Inactivity or prolonged standing
- Previous leg trauma

Signs and Symptoms of CVI and Venous Ulcers
- Aching, throbbing, or heaviness in the legs
- Swelling (edema), especially after prolonged standing
- Skin discoloration (brown or red)
- Leathery or thickened skin texture
- Open, slow-healing sores near the ankle
- Itching, tingling, or burning sensation
Early treatment of CVI can prevent complications like leg ulcers and irreversible skin damage.

Patient Success Stories

Friendly staff, free garage parking is appreciated and they took great care of my family member.

excellent doctors but if you want to get to your appointment you must arrive with a lot of time because it is terrible to find parking this makes your day change

When we retired to Central Texas, we wanted to find a place where we could get all of our medical care in one place. We chose Houston Methodist West and we’re so glad we did. Only a little more than an hour’s drive away from Weimar, we have first class primary care, cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics and probably more that thankfully, we haven’t needed yet! Most of our doctors utilize MyChart which makes keeping track of appointments, test results and messages so easy. The staff are always friendly, free parking is always available and they take great care of us!
