EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT™)

Laser Surgery for Varicose Veins

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) eliminates varicose veins by pulsing heat via radio frequency to treat the internal problem. Blood no longer collects and pools in the vein, easing the pressure that causes the discomfort associated with varicose veins.

During your consultation, Dr. Gomez will perform an ultrasound to determine the source of the problem causing the varicose vein. After identifying the issue, he develops a treatment plan and explains what to expect. The treatment plan is submitted to your medical insurance carrier, which may cover the cost entirely.

Before your procedure, a local anesthetic is injected to numb the area. Treatment is minimally invasive, and usually lasts around 20 minutes. Compression bandages are applied, and compression hosiery is required for a week following EVLT. Patients get back to their usual routine immediately, but need to wait a week before resuming exercise.

The pressure and discomfort from the varicose vein are relieved right away. A few weeks after EVLT, patients often return for a phlebectomy. In this quick session, the doctor makes a tiny incision called a micropuncture near the varicose vein, and removes it entirely. Once the vein is gone, there’s no more varicose vein to present a problem. The patient wears compression bandages for 48 hours, and returns to normal activity immediately.

Common Questions:

How long does EVLT treatment take ?

The EVLT session lasts approximately 20 minutes.

How many EVLT treatments will I need ?

Multiple EVLT treatments may be required if multiple veins are no longer working properly.

Can I go back to work after EVLT ?

Yes, most patients walk out of the office and return to work right away. The treatment doesn’t take too long, and can be easily worked into anyone’s schedule.

Can I exercise after EVLT ?

No, in order for the treated area to heal properly, it is important to avoid rigorous lower body exercise for one week following the session.

Will I require compression garments after EVLT ?

Yes, compression bandages will be applied immediately after the procedure, and you will need to wear compression garments for a week to ensure proper healing.

What areas can EVLT treat ?

EVLT can treat varicose veins on any part of the body.

Will my insurance cover EVLT ?

Some plans do, however, insurance plans and policies vary greatly between patients and coverage cannot be determined until after your consultation. The Houston Vein Institute will contact your insurance company to determine your coverage.

Does EVLT hurt ?

Before the EVLT treatment, Dr. Gomez will inject a local anesthetic to the affected area. The local works quickly, and the procedure is generally painless. After treatment, pain is minimal and easily managed with over-the-counter remedies.

How much does EVLT cost ?

Each patient’s cost depends on a number of factors such as the number of varicose veins to be treated, and the complexity of the underlying cause. The Houston Vein Institute will present you with a recommended treatment course, and your insurance may help with some or all of the cost.
